 Are you getting this error?

Here's why and how to avoid it.....

First, all textures to be exported from QTiP need to be of Max's 'Bitmap' type and in the diffuse slot of the material as shown below. The actual file format can be any that Max can handle. We'll use the smiley texture as our example.

QTiP will extract only the portion of the image used on the model to save space (plus any oversampling).  If we create a sphere and texture map it with our smiley texture like this:

Our resultant output texture that QTiP creates will look something like this:

Now for the tricky part!  Let's repeat our texture on the object as shown by scaling the UVW coordinate gizmo:

The resultant output from QTiP will look like this. (Note: Each 'smiley' would be the same size as above resulting in an image 4x as large in each dimension. Its sized here for demonstration)

Here's the moral to the story...
The necessity to tile an image that is repeated on the model is a limitation of the MD2 file format and because all the images on a model will be in one texture space.  If one smiley is 128 x 128 and it is tiled as shown, the resultant texture space will need to be about 512 x 512!  If you're using the trial version of QTiP (which is limited to a 128 x 128 image) or have forced your texture to be too small in the registered version, then this error will appear even though your original texture is still 128 x 128...voila!
